[New York, NY – September 10, 2020] – Today, rising singer-songwriter Mackenzie Shrieve returns with her new single and video, “in the before.”
Listen to “in the before” HERE.
The song was written and recorded during lockdown by Mackenzie, her bandmate Tia Dizon, and producer Nat Jenkins across three different states. “in the before” follows her electrifying 2019 debut EP, Running in My Bed.
“My friend Tia wrote the guitar for this and when she sent it to me a few months back, I was immediately transported. I wanted to write something soft and emblematic of summer time. It ended up being from the perspective of me as a teenager first having crushes. It’s breezy and light and hazy and I had the sweetest time writing it,” says Mackenzie of the new track.
Proceeds from the song will be donated to the Okra Project. The Okra Project serves the Black Trans community by “home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans People wherever we can reach them.”
The beautiful music video accompanying this release was directed by Mackenzie’s cousin and frequent collaborator, Frankie Whitty. The use of their backyard, slide projector, and bedroom as set pieces sweetly evokes the suburbs and plays on relevant themes of isolation and communication.
2020 began with Mackenzie Shrieve releasing a string of live music videos in January shot in studios in NYC. In February, Mackenzie played a SOLD OUT show at Bowery Ballroom alongside Tor Miller, Charlie Brennan, LIIV and Brandon Rosen sponsored by GigFinesse.
Back at home in Berkeley, California, “in the before” foreshadows music yet to come and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter of Mackenzie’s story.
“in the before” is out everywhere now.
